History of Yorkshire Terrier

History of the Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier’s history is full of charm and character, tracing its roots back to the 19th century!

In an effort to create a small but hardy dog that could hunt vermin, breeders in England’s county of Yorkshire began cross breeding various terriers.

By crossing an Old English Black and Tan Terrier with a Paisley or Clydesdale Terrier, they created a unique breed that was characterized by its long silky coat, distinctive face markings, and groomed appearance.

The development of the Yorkie received much attention from wealthy families in the region who wanted their own small companion dogs.

By 1870s, these little dogs had become quite popular throughout Britain and were well established as a distinct type of canine.

At first they were called Broken-haired Scotch Terriers or Toy Terriers; later on they became known as Yorkshire Terriers when it was discovered how much they originated from the county of Yorkshire.

Over time, this new breed spread across Europe and eventually made its way across the pond to North America around 1872.

Since then, Yorkies have been bred for both show competitions and companionship purposes with many notable celebrities owning them over the years.

Despite the size, they remain just as energetic and affectionate, to be one of the most popular toy breeds around the world!

Yorkshire Terriers have certainly come a long way since being developed in 19th century England — their origins firmly rooted in Britain’s county of Yorkshire!
